Le Recknynge

In his novel Dead Man in Deptford, Anthony Burgess was struck by the solitary French phrase "le recknynge" in a document otherwise written in Latin. Burgess writes:

Le recknynge--What Frenchified madness is this? It is a lie of language, unpurposed maybe, that is a badge or brooch of the lie of the whole (p. 268).
